Three Monmouth Swimmers Earn CSC Academic All-District

Johnson, Peetz, Schaefer advance to All-America ballot

MONMOUTH, Ill. (03/01/2023) — Monmouth College women's swimmers Lauren Johnson (Pekin, Illinois), Bella Peetz (Lake Geneva, Wisconsin) and Evelyn Schaefer (Stoughton, Wisconsin) were named Division III Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) on Tuesday. All three will now be on the Academic All-America ballot, with the team announced in March 15. The award criteria balances athletic accomplishments, academic accomplishments and extra-curricular activities.

Johnson is a senior biology major with a 3.69 GPA. . She was on the 400 yard medley relay team that finished sixth at the MWC Championships, earning points for the team. Johnson also set personal bests in three events at the MWC Championships

Johnson is a member of multiple honors societies at Monmouth and has also earned a variety of scholarships including the Monmouth Women in Science Scholarship. Johnson worked on campus in the SHIELD COVID center and is a House Manager for Pi Beta Phi. She has been a summer intern at the Environmental Health Department in her native Tazewell County and a summer research intern in the Microbiology and Immunology REU at the University of Utah.

Peetz is a senior neuroscience major with a 3.81 GPA. She set new season and career bests at the MWC Championships while swimming in multiple freestyle events.

Peetz has a fine arts scholarship for chorale and is involved in multiple honor societies. She is also on the Panhellenic Council and a member of the American Chemical Society while working as the HR of Pattee Residence Hall.

Schaefer is a sophomore environmental science major with a 3.56 GPA. She set numerous season and career bests in freestyle and backstroke events at the 2023 MWC Championships.

Schaefer is also in honor societies and a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She is also involved in volunteering to help raise money and awareness for youth homelessness in Monmouth and Galesburg,.

To qualify for CSC Academic All-District, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, have a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA and participate in at least 50% of their team games. Student-athletes are nominated by their own institution's Sports Information Director and the awards are voted on by CSC members.

All three will be on the All-America ballot with first-, second- and third-team honorees announced March 22. The last time a Monmouth student-athlete was named a CSC/CoSIDA Academic All-American football player Matt Barnes in 2016. The Scots have had nine All-American honorees since 1983. The Scots had 10 student-athletes names Academic All-District in the fall seasons and four in the winter seasons with these three joined by basketball's Lily Harlan, announced last week.
