Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Finale to Cornell
Schmidt Nets Season-Best 21 Goals
MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/30/2023) — The Monmouth College women's lacrosse team honored five seniors on Saturday but dropped the final game of the season to Cornell. The Scots (0-13, 0-7) fell by the score of 19-3 as the Rams clinched a MWLC playoff berth.
Cornell scored just 29 seconds into the game and they led 6-0 after 12 minutes, Elizabeth Schmidt (Waverly, Iowa) got the Scots on the board with her team-leading 21st goal of the season. Lauren Lehmann (Peoria, Illinois) assisted the goal with 1:47 to play in the opening quarter.
Cornell scored all five goals in the second quarter to take an 11-1 lead and start the running clock. They added the first three goals of the second quarter before Kaylee Doebet (Mount Horeb, Wisconsin) scored with 4:06 to play in the third quarter. Anna Davison (Bettendorf, Iowa) assisted on the goal. With 19 seconds to play in the period, Natalie Labicki (Antioch, Illinois) scored to cut the Cornell lead to 14-3.
The Rams scored five goals in the fourth quarter to finish off the 19-3 win. They were led by Cece Zanoni with a school-record 10 goals.
Schmidt led the Scots with six ground balls on Saturday while Doebert added three. Goalkeeper Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) made 10 saves and finished the season with a school-record 163 saves in a season. That tally also ranks fourth on the career list, despite this being her first season on the roster.
Schmidt led the team with 21 goals and 22 points on the season. The 21 goals ranks fifth in Monmouth history for both a single-season and career while the points are seventh on the season list.
Davison finished the season with a team-leading 33 ground balls, the sixth-best season for the Scots. Selquist also ranks top 10 with 30 ground balls.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: The Scots honored five seniors pregame, four players and student manager Nicole Welch. Senior Madison Meldrum (Colona, Illinois) who scored a seven-goal game in 2021, made her first appearance in more than two years as she started and got a couple minutes of action. The hard-working senior, who is also a part of the Sports Info staff, missed the last two soccer and lacrosse seasons with a hip injury suffered during the 2021 lacrosse season. Another senior, Isa Perez (Chicago, Illinois) missed all but one game with an injury. Doebert, a soccer star for the Scots, scored two goals and had three assists while starting all 13 games in her first season on the lacrosse teamMacKenzie Holmes (Clive, Iowa) scored 14 goals this season, the eighth-best in school history. She finished with 26 career goals which ranks fourth on the career list.
