Women's Soccer Falls to Knox on Wednesday
Selquist Makes Four Saves in First Career Start
MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/07/2021) — The Monmouth College women's soccer team allowed a goal just 41 seconds into the game and Knox made it stand up for a 1-0 win on Wednesday afternoon. The Scots came close to tying the game in the final minutes with a shot that hit off the crossbar but they were unable to tie the game as the rain started to fall.
Knox took the opening kick right down the field and went on top in under a minute. Lydia Mitchell's shot on the breakaway beat freshman goalkeeper Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) at the 41 seconds mark.
"We've worked through some defensive issues and I think, for 89 minutes that was one of the best defensive performances this season," said coach Lucas Henderson. "Unfortunately it's a 90-minute game and we need to capitalize better on our chances."
The Scots took four shots in the first half and came close to scoring twice on set pieces. One ball from Payton Gosell (Antioch, Illinois) went just past the goal post and another was saved. Jordyn Gosell (Antioch, Illinois) also had a shot on goal that was saved and she led the team with three shots overall.
In addition to the Gosell twins combining for five shots, two on goal, Shelby Sims (Peoria, Illinois) also took two shots and Madison Walker (Vernon Hills, Illinois) took one.
"I'm proud of Lea for a strong performance in her first ever start," said Henderson. "Sims gave us a great game as well."
