Women's Tennis Wins Twice on Saturday

Stefanova Moves to 4-0 in singles

Monmouth, IL (09/02/2023) — The Monmouth College women's tennis team swept two matches on Saturday in Dubuque, Iowa to move to .500 on the season at 2-2. The Scots started the day with a 7-2 win over the host Dubuque Spartans and then beat Wisconsin-Stout 8-1 in the afternoon.

In the first match, Natalie Labicki (Antioch, Illinois) and Kathi Ramsenthaler (Linz, Austria) won at No. 1 doubles 8-5. Ivana Stefanova (Streamwood, Illinois) and Jennifer Shimmin (Monmouth, Illinois) won at No. 2 doubles 8-0 while Kimber Calvert (Paris, Illinois) and Julia Mheidze (Springfield, Illinois) lost at No. 3 doubles in a tiebreaker with the final score of 8-7 (5).

In singles, Stefanova played at No. 1 and moved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Ramsenthaler played at No. 2 singles and won 6-1, 6-2 while Labicki won at No. 3 in straight sets. 6-0, 6-3. Calvert picked up her first collegiate win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles and Shimmin won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Mheidze lost in a tiebreak at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 7-6 (5), 10-3.

"The team played a higher level of shot selection today and overall there was a solid commitment to be patient and grind out points," said head coach Brian Dahlstrom. "We are learning with each match and it was great to see some players get there first wins out there today."

In the second match, Coach Dahlstrom switched up the lineup again with Labicki and Stefanova playing No. 1 doubles and winning 8-1. Ramsenthaler partnered with Shimmin to win 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Maddie Psomas (Hoffman Estates, Illinois) earned her first college win with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles with Calvert.

In singles, Ramsenthaler moved up to No. 1 while Labicki at No. 2 and Stefanova at No. 3. All three won in straight sets, as did Calvert at No. 4 and Shimmin at No. 5 Mheidze lost at No. 6 in straight sets. Stefanova is now 4-0 in both singles and doubles this season.

The Scots (2-2) will face St. Ambrose at 3 p.m. on Friday in the home opener. The match will also include the men's teams and kick off Family Weekend on campus.
